On the 22nd July the SEI has just launched Phase 3 of the Greener Homes Scheme. As predicted, the new scheme doesn’t apply to new houses (for which solar panels have always been a no-brainer anyhow).

SEI has released information on grants funded to date, and the following is the breakdown;

  • Biomass 26%
  • Heat pump 26%
  • Solar Thermal 48%

All documentation for Phase III has changed. Old versions of documentation will not be accepted. The new application form can be downloaded by going to the grants section or by clicking here.

Any dwelling under 1 year old and/or that has not been occupied for at least a year will not be eligible for support, and an existing dwelling has been defined as:

  • Has been occupied for a minimum of 1 year
  • Has an existing heating system

There are 2 new boxes to be filled in on the new grant form;

  • Building age (estimated in years)
  • ESB MPRN (located ate the top right hand corner of the bill. (This is the actual meter no.)

What Level of Funding is Available?

Northern Ireland Grant Scheme
The Reconnect programme closed to grant applications on 31st March 2008.

Reconnect opened for applications on 24th July 2006, and it aimed to assist at least 4,000 private households to install up to two of the following technologies: solar hot water, photovoltaic (PV), wood fuelled boilers, wood pellet stoves, ground source heating, hydro electric turbines or wind turbines. The total funding allocated to this programme, over two years, was £8m.

Northern Ireland Electricity board grant is still open. NIE PV Top-Up Scheme
PV applications to the Reconnect Programme or the Low Carbon Buildings Programme will be eligible for a 15% top-up grant from Northern Ireland Electricity.   This will be at a rate of £900 per kWp to a maximum of £4,500 and is open to community/non-profit organisations in addition to householders.  NIE will administer the top up grant and application forms for the top up will be posted out once the Reconnect grant has been claimed. For more information see the NIE Your Energy website.

NIE Help With Hydro
This programme is to help encourage the development of small-scale hydro schemes. Householders can apply for a grant of £1,000 per kW, up to a maximum of £5,000, whichever is smaller. This grant is only available to hydro schemes in Northern Ireland, and it is only for new schemes – it will not be paid retrospectively. For more information see the NIE Your Energy website.
